dot-library or dot-lib...which do you like better?

ICANN (the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers) has opened the door for new domain names by approving a recommendation that would add a large number of new domain names to the existing short list (e.g. .com, .net) and would also expand the character and language sets for all of the internationalized domain names.  Remember when the .xxx domain name was turned down?  Yeah, that was these guys.  So, now they're starting a new chapter in more domain names.  So remembering what those last few letters are will become all that more important (says the person who mistook a .net for a .org and found herself in a right mess because of it).  Read more about the decision in the InfoToday article by Barbara Quint.

How about we get Mr. Bill Gates to foot the bill? We would need a big backer; .museum was put into existence circa September 2000 thanks to funds of the International Council of Museums and the J. Paul Getty Trust. Carnegie was the brick-and-mortar library champion of his day; Gates could be the point-and-click champion of today.

To be sure, the registrations for a .lib or .library would have to be only for proven library institutions. And then comes the real question out of all this: To sustain themselves, could the subscribing libraries choose to run information-relevant ads (agreed to by the governing body that puts up the $185,000 application fee for the domain name?)

I guess I'd ask another question: Who's ready to come up with $100,000 to $500,000 to get such a TLD approved? And is it really worth it? I don't have a ready answer for either question... and if one organization does come up with the half-mill for the TLD, does that give them control over registration?
