Library reference SMS to IM hack
I stumbled upon this page from the American University Library showing their IM reference options, including a MeeboMe widget and a SMS to IM service (I'm sure that I saw it on somebody's blog, or on some listserv -- sorry, I don't remember where). They have created an SMS to IM service where
users can text a message to a particular number and include the word "askaulibrary" in their message.
Nifty! Is anyone else doing this?

Haven't been doing this but want to! We looked into getting a short code like this but it was incredibly expensive... incredibly being in the range of $1,000/month.
I'd like to know how they've managed to make it happen. Is American shelling out the big bucks, or did they find a workaround. Do tell!

Thanks for this post! I've been trying to figure out SMS reference for a while, but couldn't find a really good solution. It looks like the SMS to chat is part of AIM's services: http://buddyinfo.aim.com/ I just tried it from my phone to my IM name and back, and it worked beautifully.

Thanks for writing about our work, Sarah! We're not getting much use yet, but it's fun to be ready for SMS reference possibilities. Let us know if you have any questions.
Cheers! -Alex

Kim asked if we at American are "shelling out the big bucks" for the SMS to IM capability on AIM/Meebo. Nope, we are paying anything not at all. It's absolutely FREE.
