IL 2006: What's Hot & New with Social Software

IL 2006: What's Hot & New with Social Software
Steven Cohen

Steven constructed his presentation in an A-Z format.  Here we go!

A: Ajax (what a lot of social software tools are based on)
B: Beta, Browster (www.browster.com) - instead of opening new links in a new window, it opens up new mini-pages that aren't actually browser windows (not sure of the benefit here...)
C: CoComment (www.cocomment.com) - allows you to use a bookmarklet to keep track of all the comments you've made on a blog post, and then notify you by e-mail when anyone else posts a comment to that post.
D: Digg (www.digg.com) - allows you to put up a story and then stories can be voted on for popularity, the more popular they are the higher they show up on the site.  You can set up feeds for searches.  May be bought out by NewsCorp.
E: Econsultant (www.econsultant.com/web2/) - a directory of cool tools to use for Web 2.0 functionality on your websites, organized by tool-type
F: Flickr (www.flickr.com)
G: Gmail (www.gmail.com) - not only e-mail, but chat as well
H: Hype - many of the social networking tools are largely built on hype and will not survive over time
I: Image Editors - (resizr.lord-lance.com, pxn8.com, snipshot.com) - allow you to crop, resize, etc. images and PDFs for free
J: Jenny Levine (the queen of social software)
K: no K :(
L: Library Thing (www.librarything.com) - organize and catalog your books online and share your collection list with other users
M: Moo (www.moo.com) - Flickr images made into little cards with printed info on the back, Meebo (www.meebo.com) - web-based IM, Media Convert (media-convert.com) - create one type of media file to another, Mojeek (www.mojeek.com/mps) - , Muppets Wiki (muppet.wikia.com) - Unofficial Muppet Show wiki
N: Netvibes (www.netvibes.com) - lets you create your own homepage with feeds, searches, weather, etc.
O: OCLC
P: Pandora (www.pandora.com) - music stations built on what you like and the site builds in other music they think you'll also like, Purevideo (www.purevideo.com) - Metasearch for video (searches 30 video sites simultaneously)
Q: no Q :(
R: RSS - is it social software?  not really, as it's a more solitary endeavor--no giving or sharing
S: Stephens, Michael; Snapper (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2703/) - installs a plug-in for Firefox that lets you draw a box on a webpage and grab specific parts of a screenshot
, Slideshare (www.slideshare.net) - a place to upload and share PowerPoint presentations, much like YouTube shares videos T: Trackback? (Steven says trackback is dead--I agree),  Typo of the Day (http://typooftheday.blogspot.com) - the most commonly misspelled words in library catalogs
U: utube.com (when YouTube was purchased by Google, this site was overloaded--it's the Universal Tube and Rollform Equipment Corporation)
V: no V :(
W: Wikis
X: no X, but someone suggested Xanga
Y: YouTube
Z: Zoho (www.zoho.com) - a virtual Office-type suite of products that are web-based and a competitor to Microsoft's software products.

Audience members were able to contribute their own ideas and favorite sites:
Gmail Space - lets you use your Gmail space as a file server (FTP site) - you can also set it in player mode for MP3s.

Twingine: Compares search engine results between Yahoo and Google on one screen

Gliffy: a collaborative chart-building, diagram-building tool

Flock: version of Firefox that integrates del.icio.us, Flickr, and several other tools into the browser.

CuteOverload: cute animal photos (Awwwww)

Qumana: Easy blogging tool

Last.FM: Looks at the music you're looking to and refers you to other users who listen to similar things and lets you tap into their collections as well

CiteULike: lets people read and tag scholarly articles and build your bibliography

Picasa: Upload photos from computer, takes tagging and pulls it into the web database

Odeo: podcasting tool, but some problems with the feeds it generates

Yeah, there are a few "V" items that could have been included...that'd be one :)
