WorldCat.org launches: a coupla thoughts
WorldCat.org has launched (in beta). It's really fast--which impressed me right off the bat. You can also set up a WorldCat.org search box on your own site.
Here are a few things that stood out to me as areas for improvement:
- The option to buy the book is much more prominent (due to typeface choices, graphics, etc.) than the option to find it in a library. Instead of "Enter location information" in standard black typeface, perhaps that could be bigger, a different color, and read "Find it in a Library."
- The tabs (libraries, details, subjects, etc.) would better belong at the top of the page--above the item information. Where they are now, they get lost and a lot of valuable information will be missed by users.
- When you're in an item record, there's no way to return home or begin a new search. You can't even click on the "Find in a Library" or "WorldCat" logos at the top of the page. There is the omnipresent search box in the upper right, but people like to go back to the first page--that option should be available.
And here's a suggestion for WorldCat as a whole--not just for WorldCat.org. Improve the way you associate locations with library systems. Currently, if you are part of a library system that spreads across multiple cities and zipcodes, you only get to have one zipcode associated with you in WorldCat. So, in a library system like ours with twelve locations, we only get one city/zipcode. As a result, when a user who lives in a town where we have a physical library puts in his zipcode, WorldCat doesn't show that library as being closest to him. Instead, it shows a non-system library (one of the independent city libraries in our county) as being closest, and then lists our county system as second. But if the user doesn't know his library is part of our county system, he would be left confuddled as well as being given incorrect information about which library is closest. The way it is right now isn't giving accurate information. In my opinion, WorldCat needs to either:
- allow system libraries to be associated with multiple towns and zipcodes OR
- list each and every library location within a system that has one OCLC code separately (this would be my preferred choice)
Anyone else think this is a problem?

Yes, I'd really like it if they listed each and every library within a system that has one OCLC code separately. There are three libraries in our system that are 30-50 miles from each other. While you can always get a book sent to your local branch, sometimes you want to know what's physically on the shelf at your location, not something you have to drive an hour to get to.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean Ted. It's not really a display issue and Google has nothing to do with it...hey, did I just get duped by comment spam?

Perhaps some skilled person could set up a Greasemonkey or Stylish fix for the display issues for Firefox, and make a widget for Google home pages.
