Contact your senators online about DOPA

The ALA Legislative Office is urging members to contact your senators to educate them about the effects that DOPA would have on your libraries.  They even provide a way to contact them online.  From their talking points:

  • Schools and libraries accepting eRate are already required under CIPA to block obscene or offensive internet content. Legislation like DOPA is not necessary.
  • DOPA is much too broad. The bill proposes to block access to beneficial collaborative Web applications and resources.
  • Education is the best way to protect children from online predators. Blocking Web sites does not protect children—teaching them to use the Internet responsibly and safely does.

They also urge libraries to give senators real-life examples of how we're using these social networking sites within the library to reach out to our customers.
