Library Code Monkeys Wanted
Jessamyn links to Dan from Librarian's Rant--he is bemoaning the fact that more librarians are not coders:
[O]ur profession is borderline incompetent w/r/to software development, and the more people we can get who understand this stuff, the more likely our chances of basic survival as an industry.
I agree 100%. We need to teach coding in library school, and promote continuing education (including coding) in our librarians. All of my coding skills are self-taught, on my own time. I want to learn several new languages, but cannot due to the limitations of work-time and my reluctance to invest my few off-work hours in studying code. My guess is that I'm not alone in this. What to do? Well, my own take on things is that the best option is to push to our management the importance of keeping our coding skills current. Global changes at a library school level will probably take time, but I hope it's something that the program people are considering.

Excellent. I took a number of database classes, but wish now that I'd cross-department-ed and taken some CS classes as well. Today's LIS students should really be encouraged to do that.

You have inspired me to look into course options here. My previous university didn't offer much, but this one looks more promising. I'm aiming for a class called "Database and the Web," but I have to take two prerequisites: "Introduction to Information Technology" (hm... sounds like an LIS class) and "Database Applications"
