LibriVox

Librivox is an interesting new pioneer project in the world of free downloadable audiobooks.

LibriVox is an open source audio-literary attempt to harness the power of the many to record and disseminate, in podcast form, books from the public domain. It works like this: a book is chosen, then *you*, the volunteers, read and record one or more chapters. We liberate the audio files through this webblog/podcast every week (day ?). LibriVox is a VOLUNTEER project: if you have problems with the quality of a recording, get busy and make another one.

Not much there yet--the catalogue (hee hee, "gue"!) has no complete books, but one incomplete book and three upcoming books.  I think this is pretty darn cool, and will keep my eye on it for future additions.  I like the idea, and a volunteer-read book sure beats what's out there now for free for the masses--electronic-voices reading in a monotone.  Mayhaps I should invest some time into this project myself--pick a nice Ayn Rand book and go to town.

I am waiting for my phones (and I know there are some that allow it) to handle downloads of my audiobooks. Why carry 3 or 4 devices with you? Here is a audiobook phone compatible list http://www.playsforsure.com/SearchResults.aspx?searchtype=GetStarted&cat=SmartPhone

Not many right now. Found in http://www.booktones.com audiobook phone compatible list

No, nothing wrong with it. It's one of those endearing linguistic differences that I take perverse pleasure in. That's all :)

Nothing wrong with "gue" if you are a librarian in UK! *hands on hips* (or am I missing something? does it show some awful trait I don't know about?) *worried look now*

Thanks for posting Hugh! I don't think Rand is in the Public Domain, so perhaps I should choose something else (which, it would appear, would suit you just fine) :)

we're planning to open up the selection process, and let people organize to record whatever they wish (and try to get others to help). hence, though I wouldn't (ahem!) choose any rand, we'd be please to have her on there (if she's in public domain??)...

hope to hear you soon!

cheers from librivox.
