A Library Toolbar

This is really awesome.  A toolbar for Stanford's Jackson Library that users can download.  The toolbar features the catalog, databases, eJournals, etc.  That is so completely, totally mind-blowing to me.  Congrats to whatever librarian or librarians came up with this one.  You rock!  And if you're reading this, be in touch--I'm very interested in hearing how you did this.  (Plus, I live close enough to you that I could buy you a beer in exchange for this wonderful information).

This is great! And it's for Firefox, which makes it even better :)

After having seen the Jackson IE Toolbar, I started to play with Firefox extensions and made a Firefox toolbar for my library. It is still in an early stage but you can find it at this address: http://everything.no-ip.org/mb/

Please note that I am non a programmer and this was my first experience with Xul (an xml dialect behind Firefox). Read the tutorials and try it yourself!

Well, Jenny, you're still one step ahead of me. I've done some searching on this myself (as you suggest) and there is material out there on creating a toolbar for your library. Thanks, Jenny, for pulling all your related posts together here for us...it will help many of us, I'm sure.

Hi, Karen --

I've been thinking on this for a couple of years now, and I've gotten some interesting feedback during that time. Check the comments on these posts (I didn't check each one, but they're my major posts on the topic), and you could try manual trackback via Technorati or Google. Sure wish I was a programmer....

I pitched the grant idea again earlier this year, but I was told we were too busy to take on anything else because we were merging with another library system at the time. I hope to try again next year.

That's great Grace! I'll be in contact shortly to pick your brain :) I really like what you've done...

Hi Sararh,
We are in the process of developing a library toolbar. We have the software and almost have it ready. It needs to go through a text run in our Network Services department before release. We used software from http://www.besttoolbars.net to do this. It cost $100 and is well worth it.

Our toolbar with have our catalog search with options for a catalog search in Spanish, Google, and Amazon in the pull down. It will also have links to our book review database, databases, Kids site, Teen site, new books/movies/audio, and "My Account".

We look forward to releasing it to the public.
