From Amazon to the Library...
A charge from Jessamyn at librarian.net:
Librarians, please go make your own library lookup bookmarklet for your patrons and install it on all of your public access machines. Make it available on your web site. If patrons are smart enough to be using Amazon to look up books, they should also be able to use this bookmarklet.
First off, let me make it clear that I have no problem with this bookmarklet; I think it's pretty cool. But I think that people who can figure out how to use Amazon aren't necessarily savvy enough to use a bookmarklet (or to even notice it's there). Sad, but true. I don't even know if I am going to recommend we put this on our public machines. Any other thoughts on this? Anyone had experience already putting this on their public machines? Can people figure it out? Are people using it?

I'm afraid you're right...though, how can we get the idea of a bookmarklet into the public consciousness? It is, afterall, just a button.

He,
I created a bookmarklet for our own new library system a few weeks ago and made it available to all my library colleagues, complete with extremely simple instructions on use and "installation". (It isn't rocket science after all.)
Not one of them has used it. Ever.
One would expect librarians to be the first to use this kind of thing, however the sad case is that the only people who find this kind of thing useful are nerds like you, me and mr. Udell.
